Digital Parent Support Service

 

Our Digital Parent Support Service supports parents/carers on all aspects of parenting through our Free parent helpline:  0808 802 0222 (Open weekdays 6pm to 10pm and weekends 10am to 1pm).  Support is also available from Virtual Befrienders and Virtual Counsellors. Find out more here.

 

Our new Digital Parent Support Service uses a team of trained volunteers with knowledge and experience of managing the challenges of parenthood to support parents and carers ‘virtually’ by telephone, text message and email.

The service works with four types of volunteers, each providing specific aspects of support or expertise.

 

Parent Helpline Volunteer – the first point of contact for parents and carers accessing the service, providing a range of immediate support as well as signposting callers to our volunteer virtual befrienders.

 

Virtual Parent Befriender – providing one to one weekly support sessions to parents and carers, focusing on practical parenting information, listening and emotional support.

 

Virtual Expert – providing our virtual befrienders and parent helpline volunteers with the information and expertise they need in key areas such as health, education, housing, social care, legal etc. to be able to help parents more effectively.

 

Virtual Counsellor – Providing 6-8 sessions of counselling and more in depth support to parents and carers referred to them by other service volunteers.

The Essex SEND Information, Advice and Support Service provides information, advice and support on the telephone or in person.

 

We work with parents and carers of children and young people with special educational needs or a disability and with disabled children and young people, and those with SEN, up to the age of 25.

 

We can also advise on processes relating to health and social care.

 

We are an impartial, confidential service and operate at arms

length from the Local Authority.

 

Referrals can be made by a parent/carer/child/young person

themselves or anyone who has their permission.

 

We can help by:

• explaining how education settings can support children and

young people with special educational needs/a disability

• listening to your concerns and explaining what options are

available

• supporting you where required at meetings and visits to

education settings

• working with education settings, local authority staff and

other agencies to develop positive relationships with

parents/carers

• establishing links with voluntary organisations and support

groups

• guiding you through the Education, Health and Care Needs

assessment process

• enabling you to be included in discussions with education

settings and the local authority where a child or young

person is at risk of exclusion or has been excluded

• assist in navigating the Local Authority’s Local Offer Portal

and signposting to relevant agencies where appropriate

• consulting parents, children and young people and ensuring

their views influence the development of local policy

and practice for children and young people with special

educational needs/a disability.

This is a service that has been commissioned by Southend, Essex & Thurrock CCGs, for all young people who live in Southend, Essex & Thurrock to be able to access.
